Turret lathe: New Draw Tube

Summary:
This was one part of the refurb work done to the turret lathe since we purchased it. Simply put, during the pandemic we needed to precisely turn the OD of a tube that we were making a new draw tube out of. To achieve this we brought it to MITERS to be turned. One of the issues that we immediately ran into was that the metal tube would ring when cut, which ultimately reduced the quality of the finish. To solve this problem we went on a late night walk with some ziplock bags to the East Campus dorms to borrow some sand from their volleyball court. And in the end, filling up the tube with some sand damped all vibrations and led to a picturesc atmopshere of watching the lathe turn.
